Chess Masters is now available from Eloquent Books

When former Special Forces Master Sergeant David Stokes singlehandedly suppresses a terrorist attack at his local library, he sets off a chain of events that will change his life.

David is researching a college project when he hears a commotion on the floor below him in the library. His specialized training kicks in and he neutralizes the enemy but is wounded himself in the process. As he seeks to understand the forces at play, David is drawn into a web of international intrigue and learns that sometimes the closest of friends cannot be trusted. However, he also makes new friends, including millionaire Raymond Clementine, whose private security agency has been secretly contracted by the government to foil a plot to create an international incident between the Russians and the Czechs, where US interests are also at stake. Clementine hires David to assist in this project and places his personal assistant, Anne Giordano, at David’s disposal.

Anne and David are attracted to each other as she begins organizing the secret training David has planned and securing the cooperation of another former SOF, Dean Maxwell, a close friend of David’s. Dean, highly skilled and intelligent, hides a secret that could cost David and Anne their lives.

Another contact of David’s, Yevgeny Karbonenko, whom he helped defect from the former Soviet Union and who then helped bring about its fall, also has secrets of his own, but his loyalty and friendship to David is unwavering. Although David and Anne are the lead characters in this fast-paced adventure, Yevgeny and his view of the world as a chess board become the central theme as he becomes enmeshed in all of Anne and David’s missions.

In the first portion of the book, the trio work together to foil an attempt to force an international incident between Russia and the Czechs, traveling around the globe and facing many surprising enemies in the process.

The second portion of the book begins with a wounded Anne fleeing to Yevgeny for help in rescuing David, now her husband, who has been kidnapped. This turns out to be a ploy by an underground movement in Russia intent on returning the Soviet Union to its glory days: their goal is to force Yevgeny out of hiding to rescue his friend and then return him to Russia. They do not count on his resourcefulness and the cooperation of the FBI in David’s rescue, nor do they foresee that Yevgeny, David and Anne will bring about the downfall of their movement.

In the third and final section of the book, the trio has formed an unofficial team, fighting terrorists and threats to US security around the globe. This time, the threat comes in the form of a rumor that there will be an attempt made on the lives of Russian and US presidents at an upcoming summit. As they attempt to protect both leaders, David reveals one of Yevgeny’s many secrets to Anne, who has become a skilled sniper. The secret brings the three of them even closer together as they uncover surprising information about the leader of the assassination plot and foil the plot, which is linked back to their very first adventure together.

Chess Masters is a satisfying, action-filled spy adventure, full of surprising plot twists and with engaging and sympathetic characters.
